Why You Plateau, and How to Get Past It
Improvement is not smooth. You stall at a level because one specific constraint became binding.
Nearly everyone improves quickly, then stops at a level and stays there for a long time. That is not a lack of talent. It is a specific constraint becoming binding, and constraints have specific fixes.
Why plateaus happen
Early improvement comes from learning the rules and building basic habits. That is a large gain available quickly.
After that, your ceiling is set by whichever single thing fails first. Improving everything else changes nothing, because the binding constraint is still binding. That is why practice can feel completely unproductive for weeks.
Finding your constraint
Look at the board when you lose, several runs in a row. The pattern is the diagnosis.
Holes everywhere. Your placement decisions are wrong. Constraint: stacking knowledge. Fix: the flatness drill and checking under pieces.
Clean board, just too tall. You are deciding too late. Constraint: queue reading. Fix: decide during the previous piece.
Clean board, died to a specific piece type. You have a blind spot, almost always S or Z. Constraint: surface shape. Fix: build steps.
Died with a well open and no I. Constraint: bag awareness. Fix: track whether the I has appeared.
Knew where to go and could not get there. Constraint: execution. Fix: finesse.
Working on one thing
The mistake is trying to improve everything at once. Pick the single constraint your losses point at and work only on that for a few sessions. When it stops being the thing that kills you, diagnose again: the constraint will have moved.
The uncomfortable part
Most plateaus are accuracy plateaus dressed up as speed plateaus. Players believe they need faster hands, practise going faster, make the same bad decisions more quickly, and stay exactly where they were.
If your board is full of holes when you die, speed is not your problem and no amount of it will help.
The realistic timeline
Each constraint takes a few focused sessions to shift, not months. What takes months is working on the wrong one.
