The Tetris Effect: Seeing Blocks With Your Eyes Closed
Play long enough and the shapes follow you into sleep. It has a name, a literature, and a fairly mundane explanation.
Play a stacking game for a few hours and something odd happens as you fall asleep: shapes drift across your vision, rotating, looking for somewhere to fit. Some players report seeing the world in terms of how things would pack together for days afterwards.
This is the Tetris effect, and it is genuinely studied.
The research
The best-known work involved participants playing for several hours across consecutive days and reporting what they experienced while falling asleep. A large majority reported hypnagogic imagery of falling shapes.
The striking part was a group of amnesic patients who could not remember having played at all and reported the same imagery anyway. Asked where the shapes came from, they had no idea.
What that suggests
The imagery is not a memory of playing in the ordinary sense. It appears to be a by-product of the brain consolidating a newly practised visuospatial skill, and that process runs whether or not you can consciously recall the practice.
Which makes it less a curiosity about a game and more a window into how skill learning works — the game is just an unusually clean way to induce it, because it exercises one narrow perceptual skill intensively.
The generalised version
The term now covers a broader phenomenon: anything practised intensively bleeds into perception. Shelf-stackers describe packing problems. Chess players see patterns on tiled floors. Programmers dream in the structure of the thing they have been building.
The blocks version is simply the most legible instance, because everyone knows what the shapes look like.
Is it a problem?
Not by the evidence available. It fades within days of stopping and does not appear to be associated with anything harmful. It is disconcerting the first time and then merely interesting.
If anything, it is a reasonably good sign that you have been genuinely learning rather than merely repeating.
