How Gravity Speeds Up, Level by Level

The curve is not linear. It is gentle for ten levels, and then it stops being gentle.

The level rises every ten lines cleared, and each level makes pieces fall faster. The shape of that acceleration determines how a run actually feels.

The curve

The guideline formula produces roughly one second per row at level one, and compounds from there. The important property is that it is not linear:

LevelApprox. seconds per row
11.00
50.40
80.18
100.10
130.03
150.015

Levels one to five feel almost identical. Levels five to ten tighten steadily. Past ten, each level removes a large fraction of the time you had.

What that means in practice

Levels 1 to 5 are planning time. You can move a piece across the whole well, study the stack and change your mind twice. If you are dying here, the problem is your stacking, not your speed.

Levels 6 to 10 are where most runs end. There is still time to think, but not to think twice. Habits formed in the easy levels, such as hovering, reconsidering and tidying, stop fitting into the available time.

Level 11 and beyond the piece is effectively at the bottom the moment it appears. Play becomes: decide during the previous piece, execute during this one, use lock delay for the fine adjustment.

The trap in the early levels

Because the first few levels are so forgiving, they teach bad habits. You can survive a messy stack at level three by digging it out slowly. At level nine that same mess is fatal, and you will not have time to learn a better habit mid-run.

The useful discipline is to play the early levels as though they were fast: decide quickly, place cleanly, do not use time you will not have later.

Why speed is not the only pressure

Notice that gravity does not make the decisions harder. The board is the same board. What it removes is the time to make them. That is why players plateau at a level rather than degrading smoothly: you are fine until the available time drops below your decision time, and then you are not fine at all.

The fix is rarely faster hands. It is deciding earlier.
